Michael Edwards to step down as Liverpool sporting director at the end of the season

Michael Edwards is set to step down as the Liverpool sporting director at the end of the ongoing 2021-2022 campaign, confirmed the club through an official statement.

Edwards has been instrumental in a majority of Liverpool’s coups in the transfer market with the 42-year-old key to the deals involving Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane making their way to Anfield.

There had been speculation of late over Edwards wanting to call it quits on Merseyside at the end of his contract to pursue a new challenge and Liverpool have confirmed the same with a succession plan put in place.

The current assistant sporting director Julian Ward will take over from Edwards following his exit with the former tasked with the responsibility to fill Edwards’ big shoes which has brought Liverpool much success over the years under the charge of Jurgen Klopp.

Jordan Henderson and Co. clinched the Champions League and the Premier League in successive seasons with The UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup also being added to the laurels list for the Merseyside bigwigs.
