Michael Owen states his opnion on Liverpool FC’s transfer strategy this summer

Former Liverpool FC striker Michael Owen believes that Jurgen Klopp should prioritize signing a left-back this summer. Despite the presence of Andy Robertson at Anfield, Owen feels that a backup option is required in the Reds’ squad to provide cover for the highly-rated Scottish international.

Liverpool FC are not expected to make any big-money signings this summer, as has been confirmed by Jurgen Klopp. The Reds boss has stated that owing to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Premier League champions will attempt to curb their spending to the maximum possible extent.

Klopp had withdrawn interest from signing 24-year old Timo Werner in June, despite Liverpool FC being the player’s preferred destination. The German international ended up sealing a move to Chelsea FC upon the Blues triggering his release clause.

And Owen is of the opinion that the current Liverpool FC attacking options are apt for next season as well. With Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohammad Salah as the first-choice forwards, the Reds have sufficient goalscoring threat amongst them.

The former English international believes that it is nearly impossible trying to bolster the current attacking line at Klopp’s disposal. Instead, the German coach should turn his focus towards improving his fullback options at Anfield.

Currently, there is only James Milner and Neco Williams to provide cover for Andy Robertson at left-back. However, neither of the two players are natural left-sided fullbacks. Milner is a central midfielder who has often been played in the wing-back position by Klopp.

The 19-year old Williams, meanwhile, is a right-footed fullback who has played in the left-back spot in recent games. Despite his great showing at left-back, Williams would be eager on playing on the right side of the pitch. Moreover, Williams could be loaned out next season to harness his potential as a future Reds’ first-team player.

Owen added that Klopp could eye a move for a youngster who could develop into a far better player under his guidance. According to the former Reds’ striker, any young player would be keen on signing for a club like Liverpool FC.
