Mignolet lost his place in the Liverpool line up last year when Karius started to dominate the appearances stats since the turn of the year. The Belgian last appeared for Liverpool in their FA Cup defeat to West Bromwich Albion in January. Karius gained the support of staff and fans as he emerged as the first choice keeper in the latter half of a rather profitable season.
Karius’s loan move to Besiktas has dumbstruck Mignolet as he was searching for a move away himself. Mignolet says that he has made it clear to the board that he wants to play and whether it is being 2nd choice or 3rd doesn’t matter to him. Karius has moved to Besiktas on a 2 year loan which can be made permanent if certain criteria are met.
Liverpool had put a price of 12 million on Mignolet which no club seemed to agree. Before Karius, Besiktas were considering taking Mignolet aboard but the price tag put them off. Mignolet is currently playing second fiddle to the recently purchased Alisson who has kept clean sheets in all of his appearances so far. Mignolet is 30 years old and even though goalkeepers can play longer, doesn’t have quite a lot of time on his hands.
Career
The Belgian shot stopper hasn’t had a glorified career at all. The Belgian has played for quite a number of clubs but only for Liverpool at the highest level. He has also been understudy to Thibaut Courtois in the national set up for Belgium. He recieved the Bronze medal but didn’t an appearance as Courtois went on to claim the Golden Glove.
Mignolet would be looking to force through a move as long as the European transfer window is still open. This could be bad news for Liverpool as they’ll have no proper back up for Alisson in case he got injured or sidelined.
