Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has said that Cody Gakpo mistimed his move to Liverpool who have endured a horrid season so far this term.
Gakpo signed for the Reds in the January transfer window from the Dutch outfit PSV in a signing that proved to be the sole piece of transfer business last month for Jurgen Klopp’s struggling Merseysiders.
Liverpool moved in to sign the Holland international winger ahead of rivals Manchester United with Klopp keen to reinforce his injury-hit front line which has both Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota on the sidelines for the majority of the season.
His arrival at Anfield has come amid his new side Liverpool failing to impress as they remain on the search for their first league win of 2023 with Klopp’s men in 10th place in the Premier League and in danger of missing out on a top-four finish.
As quoted by a report from Goal, Gakpo’s national team boss Ronald Koeman has admitted that signing for an out-of-form Liverpool side was a questionable choice considering the player’s tender age of 23.
“He has ended up in a team that is not doing well.
“If you don’t score or you’re not important and you don’t win any matches, it’s very difficult, especially for a young player. If that was someone aged 28, with experience, it would be different.
“The level in England is higher than in the Netherlands. But they are also young boys, aren’t they? Like [Ryan] Gravenberch going to Bayern [Munich] and not playing. Then that is difficult.”
