Past and present Liverpool stars pay tribute to Ray Clemence upon his passing away

Former Liverpool FC and England goalkeeper Ray Clemence, widely regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers the game has ever seen, passed away on 15th November, 2020 at the age of 72 after a 15-year-long battle with prostate cancer.

Liverpool FC star players, both from the past as well as the present, took to Twitter to sound out their tributes for the legendary goalkeeper, whose icon-like status in the Merseyside Reds’ history is, by all means, a permanent fixture.

Jurgen Klopp, boss of the Anfield outfit, was one of the first to come out with showering praise for Clemence’s contribution to the history of Liverpool FC, where the ex-goalkeeper won a plethora of honours, including five top-flight titles and three European cups over the course of a 14-year-long stint in the Reds shirt.

“We should never forget it is great players who make great teams and clubs. You only need to listen to the legends of LFC from his era to understand his significance, said Klopp, as quoted by Liverpoolfc.com

“They say it better than I ever could, that Ray Clemence is one of the reasons our club is such a special one all these years later. He was one of the foundation stones that so much of this club’s success was built on.

“Our feeling in this moment is of course overwhelmingly sadness, but it is also appreciation. Our fans will remember with fondness an extraordinary player and a wonderful person who contributed so much to Liverpool Football Club.”

Club legends Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish and Jamie Carragher were amongst a large section of the English football fraternity who posted on their respective Twitter handles, amplifying a growing rise of tributes paid towards Ray Clemence for his extraordinary list of achievements in the game.
