Liverpool and Manchester United legend Paul Ince stated that Jurgen Klopp’s Reds used to “fall apart” after suffering Premier League title pain, but the batch of 2019-20 have shown how they are “made of stronger stuff”.
The Liverpool faithful have waited 30 years to get their hands on the English top-flight crown. In the process of trying to achieve glory, several near-misses have been felt over the course of the last three decades with former managers Rafael Benitez and Brendan Rodgers coming extremely to getting the 6-time European champions over the line.
Jurgen Klopp also saw his team fall agonisingly short in the 2019 run-in, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City pipping Liverpool to the title by just one point.
The Merseyside giants could have been forgiven for taking another step backwards having seen all of their hard work on a domestic stage domestically come to virtually no reward.
However, Klopp’s side has only gone from strength to strength since that heartbreak as Liverpool sits 25 points clear at the summer of the Premier League table and two wins away from a long-awaited coronation.
Former Liverpool star Paul Ince recently spoke to Planet Football on the change in mentality for Liverpool stating the hunger and desire to win trophies, “They won the Champions League in June and have kicked on from there. They are hungry, they are ready for it and Manchester City have not been up to the task of sticking with them this time.”
Ince further added that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp deserves plenty of credit for their astonishing season last term and still falling short but managing to bounce back from that, “I give all the credit in the world to Klopp and his players. They had a massive high winning the Champions League and that came on the back of the massive low of losing out in the title race after getting 97 points and losing just one game all season.”
Liverpool fell agonizingly close to ending their title drought back in 2014 when Brendan Rodgers was in charge of the club but capitulated the following season due to their loss in confidence and losing key players, the 52-year-old Ince admitted, “You look back to 2014 and the last time Liverpool nearly won the league, they fell apart the next season and Brendan Rodgers ended up getting sacked because they took one too many punches in the stomach, but this Liverpool team are made of stronger stuff.”
