Paul Merson has backed Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez to stay put at Anfield despite the latter’s limited first-team opportunities as of late.
Gomez has fallen down the pecking order to become the fourth-choice central defensive option for the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp who signed the young Frenchman Ibrahima Konate last summer.
With his lack of game time in recent months, speculation had been rife that the England international Gomez will look to seek a new playing destination with the likes of Newcastle United and Aston Villa keeping close tabs on his situation.
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard, who has taken over the managerial reigns at Villa Park, is rumoured to be eyeing up a raid on his former side for Gomez’s signature to bolster his defensive ranks this coming summer window.
Player-turned-pundit Paul Merson, however, while speaking to Sportskeeda seemed unconvinced that Gomez will be keen on leaving the Liverpool camp anytime soon with Jurgen Klopp’s Merseysiders competing for silverware on all fronts which should open the door for more starting opportunities for Gomez.
“Joe Gomez is another player who has been talked about a lot in recent weeks.
“With his lack of game time an obvious issue at the moment.
“He won’t be short of suitors and the decision will ultimately be his at the end of the season, but I do think he should stay at Liverpool.
“They are a really successful team and will compete on all fronts next season, so he will play enough games.”
