A cornered Liverpool FC have found a backer in Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as the Spanish coach insists the Merseysiders remain one of the best teams he has faced despite their recent run of torrid results.
Jurgen Klopp’s men came out second best to Guardiola’s outfit last Sunday in a 4-1 defeat for the defending champions and City extended their lead to 10 points at the summit upon their first victory at Anfield since 2003.
The Manchester City gaffer, however, seemed to be unfazed by recent events while speaking to the Guardian, with the Spaniard making note of Liverpool FC’s unbeaten stretch of top-flight action at home, a 68-game-long run which came to an untimely end when Burnley came visiting last month and secured a shock 1-0 result in their favour.
Guardiola was quite vocal in his praise for the showings put on display by Klopp’s star-studded squad and the City boss admitted that the recent results going against the Anfield outfit could happen to any team, his table-topping City side included.
“Sport shows how quickly it can punish you,” said Guardiola.
“Liverpool remains, in my point of view, one of the best teams I’ve ever seen in my life. They were able to make an incredible run of 68 games at home unbeaten, destroying teams, winning by a big margin or winning in the last minute, for two or three seasons without one defeat.
“And immediately, and you don’t know why, three games in a row defeat. Do you think that cannot happen to us? Of course it can happen.”
