Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool outfit has had a relatively quiet summer transfer window so far but following the departure of left-back Alberto Moreno, the Reds might need a cover-up in that department.
Liverpool has been showing a tremendous amount of growth over the past few seasons under Jurgen Klopp. Last campaign, the Reds achieved a staggering 97 points, the most ever since the club was formed back in 1892. But that was still not enough to dethrone Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team as the champions of England as they pipped Liverpool by just one solitary point.
The Merseyside unit did manage to bring back the Champions League title back to Anfield for the sixth time in the clubs illustrious history but Klopp is eager on ending Liverpool’s 30 year-long droughts for the Premier League title.
In order to win the Premiership, Liverpool need to have a backup option at every possible position on the pitch and having sold left-back Alberto Moreno in the summer, the Reds don’t have a backup defender to slot in for the hardworking Andrew Robertson.
Andrew Robertson’s rise over the past few seasons has been incredible and there is no doubt that the 25-year-old will be the first choice left-back for the next few seasons unless the Scotsman’s form dips heavily or he suffers an injury.
Liverpool was linked with a move to sign Real Betis left-back Junior Firpo in the summer but nothing really materialized as Klopp stated that the 22-year-old is not particularly on his radar. However, the only other left-back option that Liverpool have at their disposal is a veteran midfielder, James Milner.
The 33-year-old has slotted in the left-back zone for quite a while during the past few seasons when Spaniard Moreno wasn’t able to live up to the expectations of the Anfield faithful. But with Milner entering his twilight years, Liverpool need to make another signing that could benefit them for the foreseeable future to fill in for Robertson when required if they are going to compete for silverware on a regular basis
Firpo could have been the ideal candidate as the Spaniard would provide competition for Robertson but Klopp’s unwillingness to make a move for Firpo could come back to haunt Liverpool somewhere during the season.
