Roy Keane was at his critical best following Liverpool FC’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City at Anfield, with the Sky Sports pundit slamming Jurgen Klopp and Co. for their ‘excuse after excuse’ routine.
The Merseyside Reds suffered a third straight loss at their home turf when Pep Guardiola’s side came calling on Sunday and a brilliant showing from the visitors ensured a comfortable win for them to go ten points clear of the defending champions.
Keane said complacency was to blame for Liverpool FC’s misfiring run of form whilst on the pitch as the Manchester United icon said that securing the Premier League crown last season in a tremendous manner had caused the Reds to hype themselves up for the worst.
‘We spoke before the game about them making a lot of excuses, to me they’ve been bad champions,’ said Keane to Sky Sports.
‘We spoke about some sort of drop off (this season), they won the league last year and they believed their own hype and thought “we could beat other teams”.
‘When you win the title, you think, “can we get it again?” I never thought that from this group. They went, “Let’s enjoy this.” I never heard any of the players saying “Let’s do it again.” Now we’re talking about the top four and it being their target.’
Two consecutive defeats in top-flight action for Jurgen Klopp’s men means that the reigning champions face a tough battle at hand on securing a top-four finish with the likes of Everton and West Ham United mounting a serious challenge for the same.
