Former Manchester United FC captain Roy Keane has stated that in order be regarded as one of the best football sides in history, the current Liverpool FC side would have to win titles consistently over the next few years.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool FC side are on course to win their first Premier League title in 30 years. The Reds have been on a hot run of form this season, and enjoy a 20-point lead over Manchester City FC. The Merseyside club requires just five points out of their remaining eight fixtures to wrap up the Premier League season.
Keane credited the work done by Klopp since becoming the Liverpool FC manager and noted how well the Reds have performed the past couple of seasons. However, the player-turned-football pundit said that to be considered in the same bracket as of the previous Manchester United FC teams, the Reds would have to win more trophies in the years to come.
The former Irish international admitted to being a huge admirer of the Liverpool FC side of the 1980s. Keane stated that he had the utmost respect for Reds legends such as Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton.
The Liverpool FC sides of the 1970s and 1980s are considered to be one of the greatest teams in football history. Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen graced the Reds shirt during those years and won many laurels for the Merseyside team.
Keane added that despite being a former Manchester United FC player, he bore no grudge towards the Reds. Moreover, he admired the achievements of the Liverpool FC side over the past two years, including their Champions League victory.
However, Keane emphasized the point that consistency is one of the most major factors in determining the greatness of a team or a player. According to him, one or two good seasons does not guarantee the long-term greatness of a football team.
Keane expressed his opinion that many players have faded have one or two great seasons. However, their mediocrity was shown due to them not being consistent in terms of performance.
