Rumors linking Diego Carlos and Liverpool FC unlikely to materialize

According to reports, the Reds still remain interested in securing the signing of highly-rated Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos. The Brazilian is also on Pep Guardiola’s shortlist as the Manchester City boss seeks to improve his defence this summer. The 27-year old Carlos has enjoyed an incredible 2019-20 season with Sevilla in the La Liga.

The Brazilian international signed for the Spanish side only last summer from Ligue 1 club Nantes. However, it is reported that Sevilla are open to selling Carlos this summer to raise funds after the La Liga side missed out securing Champions League football for next season. Sanctioning the sale of the 27-year old centre-back would help the Los Nervionenses to recoup their financial losses.

Liverpool FC could require a centre-back signing with Dejan Lovren’s Anfield exit a looming possibility. In the event of the Croatian’s departure, Diego Carlos could be a great addition to the Reds’ squad. The 27-year old could even challenge Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for the centre-back spot alongside Virgil van Dijk in Jurgen Klopp’s starting lineup.

However, despite the interest in the Brazilian defender, Carlos’s signing does not seem to be viable for Liverpool FC. Firstly, Sevilla would surely demand a big-money offer for their star player to let him leave the club this summer. With a market value of €40m, Carlos’ signing would command a hefty transfer fee to be paid by the Reds.

Moreover, if the player does move to Anfield, he is not guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup under Jurgen Klopp. Both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have proven themselves to be excellent centre-back pairings alongside Van Dijk at the heart of the Liverpool FC defence. Displacing either of the two defenders would not be an easy task for Carlos.

Jurgen Klopp has on several occasions ruled out any high-profile signings for Liverpool FC this summer. With the club’s finances reeling under the financial impact of the COVID-19 crisis, the Reds making a move for Carlos seems unlikely, despite their interest in signing the quality defender.

The 27-year old has spoken in the past about his future playing destination. Carlos stated that any decision regarding his future would be taken at the end of the current season. However, the player did voice his desire of playing for a bigger club than Sevilla hereafter.
