Liverpool FC have reportedly made an approach for Brazilian starlet Igor Gomes. The 21-year old midfielder plays for Sao Paulo in his native country and has also been eyed for a move by Ajax.

With the Reds seemingly in need for an attacking midfielder in their squad, Gomes is a viable option. The young player has earned plaudits for his performances in the Brazilian league so far. Gomes made his debut for Sao Paulo back in 2018 and has made 29 appearances for the side.

Reports suggest that Real Madrid are also interested in signing the 21-year old Gomes. Zinedine Zidane has known to be an admirer of the young Brazilian’s playing style. Moreover, Liverpool FC’s rivals in the Premier League, Chelsea FC were also reported to be in the race to sign the Sao Paulo attacking midfielder.

The Reds have three Brazilians in their usual starting lineup under Jurgen Klopp over the past couple of seasons. Roberto Firmino, Alisson Becker, and Fabinho are the Brazilian internationals who have flourished under Klopp’s management. All three players have contributed immensely towards Liverpool FC’s dominance in the 2019-20 Premier League season.

Earlier, Liverpool FC also had another Brazilian in their ranks in the form of Philippe Coutinho. The attacking midfielder became known all around the world for his performances in the Reds shirt. As a result, Liverpool FC certainly have a great track record of harnessing the development of Brazilian players.

Igor Gomes has earned comparisons to Brazilian icon Kaka, due to his similarities in playing style. Moreover, Kaka too was a product of the Sao Paulo youth academy.

Liverpool FC’s need for a new attacking midfielder will arise due to Adam Lallana set to depart at the end of the current campaign. Moreover, there is considerable speculation about Xherdan Shaqiri asking to leave Anfield due to lack of playing opportunities.

In such an event, Gomes could be an ideal addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side. The player is very young and still has a long way to go in terms of his development. Moreover, Klopp is known to give ample opportunities to the young players in his squad.
