Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has showered praise on winger Xherdan Shaqiri’s “unbelievable” physique and revealed that the Merseyside giants are still seeking a solution to the midfielder’s persistent injury problems that are keeping him on the sidelines.
Switzerland talisman Shaqiri has made only three starts in all competitions for the Reds this season due to calf and hamstring issues which have restricted the former Bayern Munich star to very few appearances in his second season for the Anfield club.
Due to the lack of regular football under Klopp, the 28-year-old has been linked with a move away from Liverpool in the January transfer window as Serie A side Roma and LaLiga outfit Sevilla are keeping a close tab on his situation, but Klopp last week ruled out the prospect of a mid-season exit for Shaqiri claiming that he is vital to his squad.
And now Klopp has further explained that Shaqiri is working extremely hard on his fitness to play a part for the team in the remaining few months of the 2019-2020 campaign.
While speaking to reporters, the 52-year-old German head coach gave us an update on Shaqiri’s situation and his constant injury woes, which have been frustrating “It is not cool, absolutely not cool but maybe there are different reasons, He is a very special player in different departments. His physique is different from all others I ever saw, his muscles are unbelievable. So far it [his injury] was never big but it was always enough to get him out, I can imagine that is frustrating, it is frustrating for him and not good for us. We work on that. We don’t want to bring in a situation where it constantly happens, but so far we didn’t find 100 percent the solution for it, so we have to see.”
Liverpool is leading the Premier League table with 16 points and has a game in hand as well as they look to end their title drought of 30 years.
