Liverpool ensured that the Premier League title race drama went right to the last matchday with a narrow 2-1 win away at Southampton on Tuesday night.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
It was a slow start to the affair for either side with Alisson forced into action early on to keep out an effort from the Saints forward Armando Broja.
The hosts were the ones to break the deadlock in the 13th minute with Redmond advancing into the attacking third and curling his strike past Alisson to give his side the lead.
Firmino seemed to have levelled the scoreline for Liverpool after Kostas Tsimikas’ free-kick was met by the Brazilian’s head into the bottom corner of the net only for the offside flag to go up.
Liverpool got the equaliser they desperately wanted with Takumi Minamino teed up by Diogo Jota to slot home in style and make it 1-1 heading into the halftime interval.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were the dominant of the two teams in the opening exchanges of the second period as Jota and Harvey Elliott went close with their efforts.
It all came down to Joel Matip to put Liverpool in the driver’s seat with the central defender looping his header into the far corner after Tsimikas put in the delivery from a corner.
Matip’s defensive partner Konate nearly doubled Liverpool’s advantage in the final stages with the visitors at their sharpest in their own half to get past the finish line and secure the three points.
