Steve Nicol highlights the danger of the in-form James Rodriguez for Liverpool’s backline

ESPN’s Steve Nicol, a former Liverpool FC man himself, believes that James Rodriguez will pose as a major threat to the under-fire Reds when they visit Goodison Park on the resumption of the Premier League after the ongoing international break.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are scheduled to face their arch-rivals Everton on 17th October in what would be the first Merseyside Derby of this season. However, both sides have recorded a contrasting start to the present league campaign, with Liverpool FC heading into the international break on the back of a humiliating 7-2 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa.

The Toffees, meanwhile, have notched up four wins out of as many games, and sit on the top of the Premier League table, with Carlo Ancelotti’s new summer signings have been impressive in their showings on the pitch, especially the ex-Real Madrid star Rodriguez, who according to Nicol, will seek to make the most of the ‘ridiculous’ defensive high-line employed in recent games by the Premier League holders.

While speaking to ESPN FC, Nicol said, “Regardless of who the next opposition was going to be, I am questioning the backline.

“The fact that it is Everton and James, and the fact that if Liverpool decide to keep playing this ridiculous high line, if there was one man who can stick the ball behind with accuracy, it is James.

The Columbian international has been a star turn for his new side in the early stages of the 2020-21 season of English top-flight football, scoring three goals besides registering two assists in four league outings.
