Steven Gerrard tipped for Liverpool role despite Aston Villa sacking

Anfield icon Steven Gerrard has been tipped for the coveted Liverpool managerial role despite his recent sacking from Aston Villa after their horrid start to the campaign.

Former Liverpool hero Phil Thompson reckons that Gerrard has the ability to become a hit figure in the Liverpool dugout when the current head coach Jurgen Klopp decides to leave Merseyside.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Thompson said that Gerrard still has an opportunity to take up the Liverpool top job in the near future even though Liverpool have Klopp’s No.2 Pep Lijnders as a viable option for the German’s successor.

“This Villa situation will slightly affect his chances of replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool but there will always be that opportunity for him to take over at Anfield because of his Liverpool history.

“We’ve got Pep Lijnders there who could be the next Liverpool manager after Klopp but Steven could land the role in the future.”

Gerrard’s stint at Villa Park lasted for less than a year after the ex-England skipper had made the move from Glasgow to Birmingham and expectations were high for him to hit the ground running with Villa.

The former Liverpool midfield star has often been tipped as a name who can succeed Klopp to the Anfield role with Gerrard’s famed history in the Reds shirt likely to reignite his status as a fan favorite.
