Liverpool FC’s stalwart left-back Andy Robertson has voiced his concerns over Lionel Messi making the move to the Merseyside giants’ arch-rivals Manchester City this summer.
The FC Barcelona man is understood to be favoring a switch to the Premier League after handing in a transfer request at the La Liga giants a fortnight ago. Messi’s great relationship with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is believed to be the reason behind the 33-year old being keen on signing for the latter’s side.
However, Robertson expressed his fears over the Argentine forward turning out for the Reds’ primary title rivals, let alone play for any side in the Premier League.
“I hope it doesn’t happen, of course. From a complete selfish point of view, I hope it doesn’t happen.”
The Scotland national team skipper also spoke very highly for Messi, with the former labelling the player as one of the best players in the game. Robertson believes the 33-year old FC Barcelona star will bring his same level of attacking flair to the Premier League as witnessed over the years in Spain.
“I hope he stays at Barca but look he is one of, if not the best player to ever play the game. So for him to go to one of your nearest rivals is probably never a good sign. “He is a fantastic player, I have no doubt if he came to the Premier League he would bring the exact same quality and same passion and everything he brings at Barca.
“He’s a fantastic player, like I said, probably the best ever but hopefully he stays in Spain.”
Manchester City are rumoured to be preparing a £89.5 million offer plus sending Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Eric Garcia in the other direction to lure FC Barcelona in selling their prized attacking asset.
