Title Winning Liverpool FC’s Journey | Premier League 19-20

25th June will be the date that will be forever be etched in the history of Liverpool FC. On this day the Reds were crowned the Premier League champions, their first league title in 30 years. Also, it was Liverpool FC’s first-ever league title glory in the Premier League era.

The 2019-20 season has seen Jurgen Klopp’s side establish themselves as one of the greatest Premier League teams with their spectacular performances throughout the campaign. Several Premier League records have also been set by the Reds in the process, with the Liverpool FC side equaling a top-flight record of 18 successive victories. Moreover, Jurgen Klopp’s side now holds the distinction of becoming the side to be crowned the title winners earlier than any side in the history of the Premier League, with seven fixtures yet to be played by the Reds.

Liverpool FC kicked off their 2019-20 Premier League campaign at Anfield, with the Reds welcoming newly promoted side Norwich City to their home stadium. The game turned out to be a comfortable 4-1 victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side and the Reds defence was applauded for keeping the clinical Norwich striker Teemu Pukki at bay largely throughout the game.

The following week, the Reds visited St Mary’s Stadium to play Southampton FC. Despite former Liverpool FC striker Danny Ings scoring a late goal, the Reds were able to secure a 2-1 victory with goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

With Arsenal visiting Anfield the following week, there was much anticipation surrounding the game. Liverpool FC carried on their winning streak against Arsenal with a 3-1 victory, with Mohammad Salah scoring a brace on the occasion. The Reds marked the end of August with a fantastic 3-0 away victory against Burnley at Turf Moor, a venue which has proven to be a fortress for Sean Dyche’s side in recent seasons.

The Reds started the month of September with a victory over Newcastle United at home. Jurgen Klopp’s side came from behind to seal 3-1 result in their favour with Sadio Mane chipping in with two first-half goals. Liverpool FC continued their 15-match winning streak by securing a 2-1 away victory at Stamford Bridge against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea FC side. Two first-half goals from Trent Alexander Arnold and Firmino proved to be sufficient for the Reds to go home with three points in the bag, despite N’Golo Kante’s goal for the hosts in the 71st minute.

Following their visit to Stamford Bridge, the Reds were on another trip, this time to Bramall Lane to face the high flying Sheffield United, led by a wonderful manager in Chris Wilder. The Blades kept Jurgen Klopp’s side at bay throughout the majority of the game, with the Reds failing to convert their chances on goal. However, a disastrous error for Sheffield goalkeeper Dean Henderson allowed Gini Wijnaldum to get on the scoresheet and secure the three points for the visitors.

While facing former Reds manager Brendan Rodger’s Leicester City side at home, a James Milner penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time was required to secure the win for Liverpool FC. A visit to Old Trafford in the first week of October was always going to be problematic for Liverpool FC. Marcus Rashford gave Manchester United FC the lead and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side was able to withhold the danger of Mane and Salah during the course of the game. However, substitute Adam Lallana’s strike levelled the game and Jurgen Klopp would have been delighted to have taken a point on a visit to a ground which has not been the kindest of venues to the Reds in recent times. Liverpool FC then managed to defeat Tottenham Hotspurs at home, despite Harry Kane scoring in the first minute of the game. Jordan Henderson’s sublime strike and a late penalty conversion by Salah allowed the Merseyside club to extend their winning streak in the Premier League. A visit to Villa Park proved to be a tough encounter for the Reds. It was only due to Mane’s brilliance and a goal by the Senegalese in the dying moments of the game that Liverpool FC could emerge as victors against Dean Smith’s Villa side.

The match on 10th November between the Reds and their arch-nemesis Manchester City FC was always going to be nail-biting encounter. The game was touted as a potential title-decider, even with the fixture being held in the first half of the season. However, Jurgen Klopp’s side was brilliant throughout the game and the German coach emerged as the winner against Pep Guardiola on that day with Liverpool FC winning 3-1 at Anfield. The Reds then notched up narrow wins against mid-table sides Crystal Palace and Brighton in the same week. In the game against Brighton, the Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker was sent off which made the Brazilian ineligible to play the Merseyside Derby the following week for Liverpool FC. Instead, Adrian was entrusted by Klopp between the sticks for the Reds when they welcomed their city rivals at Anfield. Divock Origi continued his scoring spree against Everton as witnessed in recent seasons, with the Belgian scoring two goals to ensure a 5-2 scoreline in favour for the Reds.

Upon welcoming Alisson back to the starting lineup following his one-match suspension, the Brazilian shot-stopper kept three consecutive clean sheets for the Reds in games against AFC Bournemouth, Watford, and Leicester City. Despite their defensive brilliance in these three fixtures, Liverpool FC’s attack was on fire too, with the Reds scoring nine times during the course of three matches. Liverpool FC ended the year of 2019 with a narrow 1-0 victory over a tough Wolves side, who seemed to trouble the Reds defence in the game.

Jurgen Klopp’s side started 2020 with a 2-0 victory over visitors Sheffield United. Mohammad Salah and Mane got on the scoresheet to ensure the Reds stay in the first position in the Premier League standings. The next two games were important for Liverpool FC, with a visit beckoning to London for a game against Tottenham Hotspurs, followed by the Reds welcoming Manchester United FC to Anfield. Defensive brilliance and a Roberto Firmino masterclass ensured a 1-0 victory for Liverpool FC at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Jose Mourhino’s side. The Reds then outclassed the United side 2-0 at home with Van Dijk and Salah scoring on either side of the half.

Perhaps the toughest game Jurgen Klopp had to endure during the season till then came in the form of the Reds visiting Molineux to face Wolves. The hosts were terrific in the game and looked certain to end Liverpool FC’s unbeaten streak in the Premier League. However, Firmino’s goal in the last ten minutes of the game proved to be the match-winner for the Reds. A visit to West Ham United turned out to be an easy win for Liverpool FC, with Alex Oxlade Chamberlain shelling out a match-winning performance. The English midfielder was on fine form in the game against the Hammers, scoring once and threatening to break down the opposing defence on several occasions. Chamberlain got on the scoresheet again in the following game against Southampton at Anfield, with the Reds winning the match 4-0, and Mohammad Salah rising up the goalscoring charts with two goals on the day.

As the Premier League title season neared its end, it fell upon Jurgen Klopp’s side to bear the large expectations of the Liverpool FC fanbase, who had been waiting for Premier League glory for 30 years. The Reds managed to scrape through a 1-0 victory against Norwich, who were amidst a relegation battle at the bottom end of the table. Sadio Mane’s goal at the Carrow Road proved to be enough for Liverpool FC to take home the three points. However, when the Reds faced West Ham United in their next game at Anfield, the fixture turned out to be a pretty anxious one for the Liverpool FC supporters. The Hammers took the lead in the 54th minute with a sublime strike from Pablo Fornals and looked set to end Liverpool FC’s hopes of replicating Arsenal’s “invincible” season of 2003-04. However, Mane and Salah switched gears in the last 20 minutes of the game and scored to turn the tide in Liverpool FC’s favour.

Coming to the end to February 2020, the Reds witnessed a shaky period. Coming fresh off a loss to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Round of 16 tie in the Champions League on a visit to Madrid, Liverpool FC suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Watford. Ismaila Sarr proved to be the villain for the Reds faithful on that day with the Senegal international scoring twice to help his side overcome the runaway Premier League leaders. The defeat marked the conclusion of the dominance shown by Jurgen Klopp’s side in the 2019-20 campaign and also ended the possibility of the Reds finishing the current Premier League season as unbeaten.

Liverpool FC needed to regroup after the defeat suffered at Vicarage Road to Watford. The Reds did bounce back from their loss with a 2-1 victory against Bournemouth at Anfield the following week. Trailing the visitors after a goal from Callum Wilson, Mane and Salah again shouldered the responsibility of achieving the win for their side and both wingers chipped in with crucial first-half goals.

After the Bournemouth game, football was suspended all throughout the United Kingdom due to the massive outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. There were rumours about the 2019-20 Premier League season being scrapped which raised fears among the Liverpool FC supporters who had been longing for title-winning glory. However, the Premier League Project Restart mission was started with the objective of playing the remaining fixtures behind closed doors, with the first games to be played on 17th June.

The Reds faced Everton in their first match post the lockdown period. The Premier League leaders visited Goodison Park on 21st June, knowing that they required just six points out of their remaining nine games to be crowned the Premier League champions. However, the 265th Merseyside Derby turned out to be a boring goalless stalemate between the two city rivals.

Liverpool FC were then scheduled to play Crystal Palace at home on 24th June. The hosts welcomed back Mohammad Salah and Andy Robertson in the starting lineup, both of whom had missed the previous game against Everton. Liverpool FC went on to win the Palace game 4-0, with a dominant showing by Jurgen Klopp’s side all over the pitch. The result left them needing just two more points to be crowned the champions of English top-flight football.

A 2-1 win for Chelsea over Manchester City on 26th June meant that the Premier League title crown was heading towards the Merseyside, thus ending a 30-year wait for Liverpool FC. Massive celebrations followed across the city of Liverpool, with the club’s players broadcasting their festivities through social media.

The first game for the Reds following their Premier League winning glory came with a visit to the former champions Manchester City. Jurgen Klopp’s side were the recipient of a guard of honour from the City players before kickoff.

However, the game was one that turned out to be rather forgettable for the Liverpool FC players as well as the club’s supporters with the Reds being subjected to a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of the hosts. The general outlook was if the Liverpool FC players were simply not in a mood to turn out for their side following their title-winning celebrations over the weekend prior to the game.

Following the rather humbling defeat on their visit to the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool FC bounced back to winning ways in usual style. Aston Villa were defeated 2-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s men on the Lions’ travel to the Merseyside. A thumping effort by Sadio Mane and a first league goal for 19-year old academy graduate Curtis Jones in the final third of the game were enough to see out a comfortable win against Villa. A dominant Liverpool FC performance, including a brace from Mohammad Salah and a fantastic solo effort by Jordan Henderson, ensured a 3-1 victory against Brighton on their visit to the Amex.

However, inconsistency rubbed in the wrong way again for the newly crowned Premier League champions when they fell to a shocking 2-1 loss to Arsenal. Despite taking the lead through Mane, a series of rather uncharacteristic errors from Van Dijk and Alisson gifted the Gunners two goals on the cusp of half time. The Reds were unable to find their way back into the game during the second half and suffered a third loss of their otherwise brilliant league campaign.

In the last home game of their glorious season, Liverpool FC played hosts to a resurgent Chelsea side at Anfield. A dazzling attacking display from the Reds meant that the Merseyside club racked up a 5-3 win over the Blues, who at one point of the game threatened to stage a comeback with Christian Pulisic proving to be a real handful for the Liverpool FC defenders. Following their victory that ensured a third consecutive Premier League season unbeaten at home, the Reds took part in the trophy lifting presentation. Club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish presented Liverpool FC skipper Jordan Henderson with the coveted Premier League title, with the 30-year old performing his iconic trophy shuffle before lifting it into the air amid loud cheers from his teammates and the club’s coaching staff.

The Reds concluded their historic league campaign with a visit to Newcastle United, with Jurgen Klopp making a number of changes in his starting lineup for the game at St James Park. Despite conceding a goal from Dwight Gayle in the very first minute of the game, the champions of England bounced back through goals from Van Dijk, Divock Origi, and a late but great solo effort from Sadio Mane to end their season with a victory taking their points tally to 99, a new club record.

The 2019-20 Premier League season, in every possible aspect, has been historic and memorable for the players, coaches, and the devoted supporters of the Merseyside giants. Records have been smashed by Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way to bring home a very-first Premier League title, thereby ending a prolonged wait of 30 years. Surely this Liverpool FC side has established its credentials to be considered one of the greatest English teams of all time.
