Former Liverpool right-back Jon Flanagan believes that Trent Alexander-Arnold will end up playing in midfield at some point in his career despite being renowned as the best right-back in the world at the moment.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has already announced himself on the grand stage at Liverpool with some stellar performances for Jurgen Klopp over the past few seasons. The 21-year-old defender has established himself as a regular starter for the defending European champions and one of the most imperative creative outlets for Liverpool.
Despite his tender age, Alexander-Arnold has already racked up 125 appearances for the Reds in all competitions including nine appearances at an international level for England. Over the past year, Alexander-Arnold has earned a Champions League title, FIFA Club World Cup medal and the UEFA Super Cup, playing the role of a creative kingpin in Klopp’s unit.
However, Alexander-Arnold had initially started out as a midfielder during his early days at Liverpool whilst at the academy. The local boy has already put himself in contention of running as the best right back in the world with his tremendous assist rate but former Liverpool right-back Jon Flanagan believes that Alexander-Arnold will surely end up playing as a midfielder in the latter stages of his career.
Flanagan, currently working under Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard at Rangers revealed how fellow local lad Alexander-Arnold will step up into a midfield role in the future one day.
While speaking to The Athletic, Flanagan said that the young Englishman has all the traits to play as a midfielder, “I love watching Trent play. He’s the best right-back in the world at the minute. He’s a fantastic player but he’s also a lovely lad. I’m so happy for him. He’s going to be a crucial part of this Liverpool team for many years to come. When he first came up to Melwood, he was very shy and didn’t say much but everyone could see that the talent was there. Once he got into his stride and he gained confidence from being part of the senior squad, it was clear that his career was going to take off. I think he’ll end up playing centre midfield for Liverpool. He’s an amazing right-back but he would be able to pull the strings even more from the centre of the park. He’s got all the attributes to play there.”
