Former Manchester City superstar Vincent Kompany has admitted that Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk could go on the become the best center-back to ever grace England’s top division.
Liverpool is sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table at the moment is the only team that has a 100 percent win record. One of the main reasons why Liverpool have become so efficient is because of their defense and Virgil Van Dijk has been at the heart of it all.
The Dutchman arrived at Liverpool from Southampton in a £75 million deal in January 2018 and has taken full control of the Merseyside clubs backline helping Liverpool to the Champions League title in his first full season with the club. The 28-year-old Van Dijk also picked up the UEFA Player of the Year award.
His legacy will soon become a legend at Liverpool if he keeps on performing at this level and ex-Manchester City center-back Vincent Kompany has only positives to say about Van Dijk. After his testimonial game at the weekend, the 33 years old Belgian stated that he has been extremely impressed by Van Dijk’s performances over the past 20 months or so.
Kompany said, “I go back to players that really impressed me when I played against them, central defenders [but] I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, It’s a weird one because he hasn’t been on the scene for as long as John Terry, Rio Ferdinand – these guys were there for a long, long time – but the signs he showed in the last few years make it obvious that if he had been at the top level for longer, he would be further as well. Being a defender is how you make your team more solid. The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after, it is a completely different set-up. I’ll give him that [accolade] because of that.”
