Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has admitted that the match against Manchester United on 20th October at Old Trafford will not be the most important game of the season.
The Premier League leaders will be hoping to keep up their incredible run of form in England’s top-flight when they take on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team this weekend.
Eight straight league victories have given Jurgen Klopp’s men control of the title race with an eight point lead at the summit of the table the Merseyside giants seem to be strong favourits against a United side languishing in 12th position on the table.
The two bitter rivals have some of the most iconic encounters when the play each other but there is a massive contrast with the two teams’ fortunes and ambitions at the moment. European champions Liverpool are now challenging for trophies on multiple fronts, and United are in transition for a rebuild with their squad.
And despite the rivalry and the history between the two sides, Liverpool and Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk has claimed that this is not the most important game for the Champions League holders. While speaking to Sky Sports the 28-year-old explained, “It’s massive, but it’s more massive for the fans I think all of the Champions League games are as big as this. The whole atmosphere and leading to the actual game are bigger than some other games but I don’t think it’s the biggest of the season. The big ones are [in] the Champions League and the ones that are hopefully going to win us the Premier League title.”
