Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that the Premier League leaders cannot afford to sign top French superstars like Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann.
The Premier League leaders do not have any French players in their first-team squad despite Les Bleus have won the prestigious FIFA World Cup last year in the summer.
French defender Mamadou Sakho left Anfield for Crystal Palace on a permanent basis back in August 2017 and none of his compatriots have moved to Anfield since Liverpool’s rise over the past few years
With the January transfer window approaching, Liverpool is heading into the market to purchase a few top-quality players that can bolster their squad to compete on all fronts for silverware.
However, the European champions have indicated that there is no specific reason not to sign French superstars but for the fact that they are too expensive and the club may not be able to afford the World Cup winners.
Having been linked with Paris Saint Germain forward Kylian Mbappe over the past few months, Klopp has opened on the speculation.
Following the triumph in the FIFA Club World Cup, the 52-year-old Klopp was asked about why he does not want to sign the big names from the French national team to which the German replied by stating, “There’s no reason for it, Kylian plays for PSG, Griezmann joined Barcelona. Obviously you know how good your [national] team is. We would like a French player but some of them are too expensive for us.”
Liverpool has already signed Japanese international Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg and the 24-year-old will join the Premier League side on January 1st.
