Loris Karius was slowly gaining the trust and respect of Liverpool fans until the day of the Champions League final arrived. Klopp’s glorius front 3 propelled the side to their first Champions League final appearance since 2007 and people really believed that they could beat Real Madrid to win the prestigious competition.
The German keeper made two errors which proved to be decisive as Real Madrid went out 3-1 winners. The goalkeeper since lost the trust of the Liverpool faithful and is now struggling with confidence issues. Karius still hadn’t recovered and continued to make errors in pre-season forcing Liverpool to buy Allisson.
Allisson is the guaranteed starter at the club with Mignolet and Karius behind him. Liverpool were looking to offload Mignolet but no club was ready to match Liverpool’s 12 million evaluation.
Karius had come to Liverpool with a reputation and had nearly 100 Bundesliga appearances under his belt. However, after recent events he needs to be the starter somewhere so that his confidence stays up.
Even though Klopp after the Crystal Palace match, said ,“Nobody told me anything on a transfer” , widespread reports suggest that German keeper has agreed on a two-year loan move to Besiktas in Turkey. Besiktas will be paying 2.25 million upfront. The contract involves an obligation to buy at the end of the two year loan for a further 7.25 million if certain playing criteria were met. Liverpool have also negotiated to add a 20% sell-on clause.
This sounds pretty good for all the parties involved. Karius will be able to play as first choice keeper there and will be able to regain his confidence. Liverpool fans would be happy to let Karius go after finding a reliable keeper in Allisson. Besiktas have recently sold their first choice keeper and have been looking for replacements. Karius could certainly fit the bill.
