A late first-half strike from Diogo Jota proved to be the matchwinner for Liverpool FC on their visit to the Molineux Stadium on Monday night.
Jota turned villain for his former side and secured a much-needed win for Jurgen Klopp’s side, one which took the Merseysiders back inside the top-six in the standings at the expense of Everton.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
With an unchanged XI on the show for the visitors, it was Wolves who looked to put early pressure on Liverpool FC, with Alisson Becker being called in action to defy a strike from Nelson Semedo.
At the other end of the pitch, the Reds fashioned a wonderful opening after Gini Wijnaldum’s neat pass set up Sadio Mane through on goal, only for the Senegalese to roll the ball past Rui Patricio and have his subsequent effort blocked.
Mane was once again at the forefront for grabbing the lead for Jurgen Klopp’s side after being found lurking inside the Wolves box with a fantastic delivery from Alexander-Arnold but his headed effort went wide.
Just as the game looked to finish goalless at the half-time break, a brilliant linkup play from the Reds frontline led to Jota’s first-time finish getting the better of Rui Patricio to find the back of the net.
The opening minutes of the second-half did not witness much of chances enjoyed by either side as the visitors chose to defend deep in order to protect a much-coveted lead.
Former Liverpool FC man Conor Coady came very close to netting the equaliser for Wolves with a header off a Romain Saiss cross and the Reds survived a major scare.
The dying moments of the game saw substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set up Salah with a clever pass and the Egyptian international followed it up with a fantastic finish past Patricio but the assistant flagged the move offside.
A late collision meant that the Wolves No.1 Patricio had to be stretchered off the pitch as the game strayed past the 100 minute mark and the final whistle marked the end of the proceedings, giving Klopp and Co. a vital win on the road.
