Xherdan Shaqiri hopeful for more opportunities in Liverpool shirt

Following an impressive cameo in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 victory over West Ham United on Saturday, Xherdan Shaqiri has voiced hope of gathering more first-team minutes on the pitch as the season progresses.

The Swiss international, who came very close to sealing an Anfield exit this summer, set up Diogo Jota’s match-winning goal against the Hammers with a wonderfully weighted pass through the legs of an opposition defender.

Shaqiri’s involvement over the last year has been very limited in the Liverpool FC shirt, however, since the start of the 2020-21 campaign, Klopp has awarded considerably more opportunities to the ex-Stoke City man.

When asked upon his first Premier League appearance in three months, Shaqiri said that he was looking forward to making a long-lasting impact for the Reds as she hopes to carry on his impressive run of recent form.

“It was unbelievable,” Shaqiri told the club’s website. “Of course, the subs always try to change the game and try to decide the games.

“It’s always nice to be involved.

“Obviously I was injured a few times and it was always the hard way for me until now. I’m very happy that I’ve got my minutes back, I’ve tried to stay fit and I hope it stays like this.”

Counting on Shaqiri’s presence in the Liverpool FC squad could be a major boost for Jurgen Klopp’s injury-laden side, as the German would want to rest his first-choice attackers in between mid-week games and award playing time to others.
