Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp is hopeful over contract rebel Gini Wijnaldum extending his stay in the Merseyside Reds colours beyond the end of his deal, which expires in the summer of 2021.
The Dutch international midfielder has gathered a lot of interest from abroad since reports this July had suggested that the player was not keen on signing on extended terms with Liverpool FC.
According to reports from Sky Sports, while speaking ahead of his team’s Premier League game against Brighton on Saturday afternoon, Klopp expressed optimism over his first-team midfielder penning a new contract with the Anfield outfit amid high interest in Wijnaldum from the likes of FC Barcelona and Inter Milan.
“I cannot really say a lot about that. I would be happy if he would stay here – that’s maybe the only thing,” Klopp said.
“But sitting here, I’m pretty happy with Gini. You see when you look at most of the line-ups.”
Wijnaldum remains one of the very few stars of Klopp’s Premier League title-winning side that have not committed their long-term future to the Reds, with Mohammad Salah and Virgil van Dijk having had signed new deals following Liverpool FC’s historic title triumph last season.
As per earlier speculation, FC Barcelona leads the race to land Wijnaldum’s signing despite arch-rivals Real Madrid too having registered interest in making a move for the ex-Newcastle United man next summer.
