Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car admits Liverpool interest came as an honour to him

Marseille central defender Duje Caleta-Car has spoken about the interest shown in him by Liverpool FC during the January window as the Merseysiders came very close to completing his signing on deadline day.

In a recent interview, according to reports from Goal, Caleta-Car admitted that he turned down the possibility of securing a move to Anfield, instead choosing to extend his stay in the Marseille shirt and harness his development as a player.

The centre-back did, however, admit feeling honoured at being eyed by a club of Liverpool FC’s stature in world football, with Jurgen Klopp’s side wanting to bring the Turkish defender in order to shore up their injury-hit backline.

“I received an offer from Liverpool.

“It was an honour for me to know that such a club wanted me. We decided with the club that I was going to stay.

“Marseille is also a great club and I still have a lot of improving to do here.”

Liverpool FC ended up signing two fresh faces in the final hours of the January transfer window as Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies made their way to Merseyside, the former, Caleta-Car’s compatriot, signing for the Premier League holders on an initial short-term loan agreement with an option to buy enjoyed by the Merseyside outfit.

Speculation persists that Klopp could be tempted to renew his interest in Car when the summer transfer window reopens in July after having seen his first-choice options in defence succumb to season-long injury layoffs.
