Former England shot-stopper Paul Robinson has urged Liverpool to re-sign Anfield hero Philippe Coutinho this summer should the deal be lucrative enough on the financial front for the Merseysiders.
Coutinho is understood to be high on FC Barcelona’s wishes to offload ahead of the next season with the Brazillian playmaker failing to cement his spot on the teamsheet and proving unsuccessful in his efforts to justify the £105 million fee paid upfront for him in January 2018.
Since taking the exit door out of Anfield nearly three years ago, Coutinho has managed just 64 league outings for FC Barcelona and was shipped off to Bayern Munich for a season-long loan deal where he did show glimpses of his past self before returning to Spain.
With FC Barcelona owing Liverpool another £40 million in add-ons, speculation is rife that the Catalan giants have offered Jurgen Klopp’s side an opportunity to sign Coutinho this summer to waive off the amount owed to them.
Speaking to FootballInsider, Robinson claims that as Liverpool remain on the hunt for a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, Coutinho can provide an excellent piece of transfer business at Anfield with the player still able to recapture his very best of form on his day.
“Of course they have lost Wijnaldum which was a big surprise for me.”
“They need to sign a replacement for him and we know Liverpool are not flush with cash right now.
“Therefore, I think the return of Coutinho would only be a good idea if the finances are right. It would have to make sense for the long-term interests of the club.
“I feared when he left that he would leave a big hole at Liverpool but they actually went from strength to strength.
“It will be a very interesting one to keep your eye on though because he is an unbelievable player on his day.
“You could not imagine him going anywhere else in the Premier League.”
