Ajax legend Sjaak Swart believes it would be a great move for Manchester United fringe first-teamer Donny van de Beek to join Liverpool this summer and fill the void left by his fellow Dutchman Gini Wijnaldum.
Wijnaldum played his farewell game for the Merseysiders on the final day of the 2020-21 Premier League season and heading into the UEFA Euros he is set to complete a long-awaited transfer to FC Barcelona.
Liverpool are believed to be scouting the transfer market for midfield options to replace Wijnaldum who was a real anchor in the centre of the park for Jurgen Klopp’s side for five long years after arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2016 from Newcastle United.
Brighton’s Yves Bissouma is amongst the players on Liverpool’s transfer radar for the ongoing summer window but the Reds will be battling it out with Arsenal to land the Brighton man’s signature.
Swart in an interview with Veronica Inside says that considering his lack of first-team involvement in his first season at Manchester United, Van de Beek should ponder over a move elsewhere with United’s fierce rivals Liverpool being tipped as a potential destination for the Holland international.
“He played really great at Ajax, until he left. He was ready for abroad.
“But at United they have eight or nine midfielders, and you have to intervene, then it takes time.
“You have a midfield with [Paul] Pogba and [Bruno] Fernandes, he is not going to throw that trainer out because they are worth €150million, on paper.
“That is a choice [about his future] he has to make himself, whether he feels like he needs to leave. I am not worried about him.”
“He would fit right in with other clubs.”
“If I look at Liverpool and Wijnaldum is leaving now, he will be a wonderful replacement. Or for Thomas Muller, at Bayern Munich.”
