Jurgen Klopp dismisses talk of a new midfield signing before deadline day

Gini Wijnaldum’s departure from the Liverpool camp this summer does not warrant a replacement from the transfer market, according to the gaffer Jurgen Klopp.

The Premier League giants have been linked with a host of star names from across Europe’s biggest leagues but are yet to reach out to the target players ahead of the upcoming transfer window deadline next week.

Brighton’s Yves Bissouma is tipped to be on the radar for the Merseysiders with Klopp understood to be keen on making a move for the 24-year-old Malian who has impressed at the Amex in recent times.

The Liverpool boss, however, took to a different note in his pre-match presser ahead of Saturday’s showdown against Chelsea with Klopp saying that there was no requirement of a fresh midfield face as he pressed upon the young Curtis Jones and the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to step up.

Keita has been one of the players who in Wijnaldum’s absence has been handed a major role in the opening games of the new season for Liverpool with the Guinean featuring on the starting teamsheet in the centre of the park.

“Gini Wijnaldum played a lot of games for us, an incredible, top player. I have watched him for PSG and have to get used to that. We miss him on the pitch and dressing room too.

“We lost a midfielder and if we count that there is not something missing. If Gini was still here then Harvey Elliott might not have played this game (against Burnley). Curtis Jones in 20 years old and can, will and has to make the next step.

“Naby Keita did not play the full season as expected but we won big games with him. Would he have played if Gini was still here? Maybe not. We have Thiago, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho. So that is the situation and there is no need to buy a midfielder just because he is on the market.

“If you think about it, there is no real need. If there was a player available who would really improve us, I would go for him. I promise.”
