Former Liverpool star Stephen Warnock has stated that Liverpool’s attackers are just not clicking following a defeat in the Champions League against Paris Saint Germain at the Parc Des Princes.
PSG put in a stellar performance against the Premier League outfit to bolster their chances of going through to the Round of 16 in the Champions League. The defeat to Liverpool, however, left Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of qualification hanging by a thread and thereby making their final group stage fixture against Napoli a must-win for them.
PSG went two ahead in the first half via goals from Juan Bernat and Neymar and although Liverpool did pull one back via James Milner’s penalty at the cusp of halftime they couldn’t create any clear chances and failed to register a single shot on target in the entire game apart from Milner’s goal.
Liverpool’s star forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were very much dormant throughout the game, and Sadio Mane looked like the only one troubling the PSG defense. Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock expressed concern over their attacking trio and Mohamed Salah in particular.
While speaking to BBC Sport, the 36 year old former Liverpool left-back went on to speak about the lack of understanding in the Reds’ front three, “I just don’t feel that the Liverpool’s front three are clicking in the same way they have done in the past, Sadio Mane was outstanding against PSG and was the one Liverpool forward who looked up for the fight. He got into some good areas, ran at his full-back whenever he could and tried to make things happen. But Roberto Firmino was very poor. He did not hold the ball up, or do his usual job of bringing other people into play. Too many passes were misplaced, and his touch was not great. And I know everyone is talking about Mohamed Salah being back in form, but I don’t see it myself. I still think he is out of sorts – he is trying to play as an individual and is not enough of a team player – and that was the case on Wednesday night too.”
Warnock is absolutely correct with his assessment because Liverpool is not firing on all cylinders and not registering a shot on target is quite unacceptable from the club that is trying to challenge for the Premier League title.
