Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has advised Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to consider leaving the club in order to reach his full potential.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper is currently competing with Gavin Bazunu for the starting position in the Irish national team ahead of the Euro qualifiers in June.
While Kelleher has progressed through the ranks at Liverpool, he finds himself playing second fiddle to the Reds’ first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson Becker.
Kelleher mainly gets opportunities in cup games to showcase his talent. Taking these factors into account, Kenny shared his thoughts on the keeper’s future and suggested that a move away from Liverpool may be beneficial for his career.
As reported by the Independent, the Ireland manager said:
“I would fully expect that. It’s not right normally to speak about a player moving, but he’s at the stage where he’s behind probably one of the best goalkeepers in the world and it’s not going to get any easier.”
“He can’t afford not playing. He knows that and he’s known that for a while. It’s not easy. There’s a process you go through with a club like that and I think and it wouldn’t be a surprise for him to move in the summer, and he knows that.”
Contrary to suggestions from Kenny, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is not expected to leave the club unless an extraordinary offer arises.
The German manager emphasized that the goalkeeper position is not a concern for Liverpool in the transfer window as they have a strong set of options.

Earlier reports indicated interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford, and Brighton in signing the 24-year-old. However, with Brentford securing a new goalkeeper, they are likely out of the race, while the other two clubs might still pursue a deal.
Klopp wants Kelleher to stay as the number two choice due to his exceptional ability. Nevertheless, it could be tempting for the player to seek regular playing time elsewhere.
A potential option for Liverpool is to allow Kelleher to leave with a unique condition. They could include a buyback clause in his contract with the next club, providing the Reds with the option to repurchase the Irish keeper when Alisson eventually departs.

This approach would enable Liverpool to bring Kelleher back in an improved shape with added experience. It is an idea the club may consider if the goalkeeper expresses a desire to leave this summer.
