Andrew Robertson Almost Joined Stoke City

Reds defender Andrew Robertson has revealed how he almost joined Mark Hughes’ Stoke City before eventually joining Liverpool last summer.

There was a major issue for Jurgen Klopp ever since he took charge of Liverpool back in October of 2015 and it was in the left-back zone. Spanish defender Alberto Moreno single-handedly cost Liverpool two finals in the League Cup as well as the Europa League and Klopp decided to use midfielder James Milner in that position for the upcoming season.

However, Andrew Robertson’s arrival at Anfield has solved the long-term problem at left back as the Scotsman has been a revelation for Liverpool since last season. Robertson signed for Liverpool from relegated side Hull City for a fee of just £8 million in July 2017 and was instrumental in Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final last term.

Although, it could have been very different for Robertson as he revealed that he nearly joined Stoke City last summer as Mark Hughes, who was then manager of the Potters, was very interested in the 24-year-old left back.

While speaking to Youtube football channel Open Goal, Robertson explained how close he was to joining Stoke City, “Stoke were quite interested in me. Mark Hughes had liked me and I think there was a wee bit of chat with them, So I was thinking they were a really good option; I think they finished top 10 that season and I was trying to get my head on a move to Stoke. I was thinking they were really keen, and at that point, under Mark Hughes, they were playing good football. They had Erik Pieters; I wasn’t sure if I was going in as back-up to him as he was flying that season.”

Robertson has already notched up five assists in 15 appearances for Liverpool this season and he is getting better with each performance. Surely Liverpool will be thanking their lucky stars to beat Stoke City for Robertson’s signature.
