Anfield icon John Aldridge dismisses Liverpool and Kylian Mbappe rumours

Liverpool great John Aldridge has played down the media speculation of Kylian Mbappe being a prospective signing for the Merseysiders in this summer’s transfer window, according to the Irishman’s column in the Sunday World.

Mbappe has been understood to be a target for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp since the past year or so but the Anfield giants remain a long shot away from tabling a formal offer for the World Cup-winning Frenchman.

Recent reports have suggested that despite Mbappe not having put pen to paper on a contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain, the 22-year-old forward is more likely to make the move to Real Madrid than join the Reds in the near future.

Moreover, PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi has made it clear on a couple of occasions that the Parisians intend to retain their prized attacking asset and will be offering him a new deal in the aftermath of the UEFA Euros.

Aldridge is also among those who does not feel as if the France international, one of the biggest names in world football, is a realistic target for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool ahead of the next season with the finances required to bring in Mbappe to Anfield quite high considering the recent pandemic-stricken difficulties at the club.

“Mbappe is constantly linked with a move to Liverpool and while I’d love to see him at Anfield, I’d say there is more chance of me starting up front for Jurgen Klopp next season.”

“It looks like Mbappe is a big Liverpool fan and on that basis, it would be great to see him get a move to Merseyside, but deals like that are well out of the club’s financial reach right now.”
