Arsenal star hails Alisson Becker as ‘best in the Premier League’

Arsenal shot-stopper Bernd Leno concluded that his Liverpool counterpart Alisson Becker is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Alisson has made a big impression at Liverpool since his then record-breaking transfer worth £65 million from Italian side AS Roma in the summer of 2018.

The Brazilian goalkeeper took over the starting role form German Loris Karius following his massive blunders in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid. Ever since then Alisson has transformed Liverpool’s backline into one of the meanest defences in Europe. Jurgen Klopp’s unit have conceded only 21 goals in their 29 Premier League games this season, with Leicester City and Sheffield United the managing fewer than 30 goals scored conceded in England’s top division.

Alisson is also the reigning Golden Glove recipient as he kept 21 clean sheets for Liverpool last season when the Merseyside giants finished in 2nd place on the Premier League table. The 27-year-old has produced vital saves at crucial moments and helped Liverpool to the Champions League title in June 2019.

While speaking to SoccerAm, German goalkeeper Bernd Leno was asked whom he felt was the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and he responded by praising Alisson due to his all-round game and had no doubt about selecting the Liverpool shot-stopper as the number one goalkeeper in the English top tier. Leno said, “For me it’s clear, it’s Alisson, He’s good at everything and his stats are also very good. He’s played a number of big games for Liverpool and for me it’s clear that he’s the best goalkeeper at the moment. Liverpool have conceded the fewest goals of any other team in the Premier League this season, and Alisson is largely behind this achievement.”

Liverpool given a harsh reminder of life is like without Alisson when the Brazilian was out injured for their Champions League exit at the hands of Spanish side Atletico Madrid early in March. Liverpool’s second choice keeper Adrian had produced some stirring displays when Alisson was ruled out with an injury early on in the season but, was portrayed as a villain following his disastrous outing against Atletico Madrid that contributed to Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat as well as the failure to defend their title.

Alisson appears to have largely overcome comparisons with national team compatriot and Manchester City star Ederson as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.  The Liverpool star has established himself as one of the best in the world and some prefer him ahead of the likes of Manuel Neuer, Jan Oblak and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who are some of the top-class goalkeepers out there in Europe at the moment.
