Both teams had efforts cleared off the line in the opening stages of the game which witnessed a frantic start with either side gunning for the first goal.

Mohamed Salah’s clipped effort was kept out by Brighton defender Adam Webster who slid in to deny the Liverpool winger while on the other end of the pitch, Alexander-Arnold was in the right position to keep out Evan Ferguson’s poke.

Liverpool did break the deadlock when Salah slipped through the pass for the in-form Harvey Elliott who produced a first-time finish to find the back of the net.

The lead lasted just nine minutes as Brighton levelled the contest with Tariq Lamptey drilling an effort at a goal, catching a deflection off Lewis Dunk, and going past Alisson Becker.

Brighton started the second period on a strong note with Solly March coming close to handing his side the lead with his shot forcing Alisson to make the save.

Liverpool’s resilience at the back, however, could not save them from Brighton forward Mitoma scoring a wonder of a strike and send the home side into the fifth round.
