Liverpool FC icon John Barnes has urged his old club to be in the reckoning for Real Madrid star defender Raphael Varane when the summer window opens later this year.
Varane has been linked with a switch to Anfield according to the latest speculation rife in the market amid talk that Real Madrid would be open to offloading the World Cup-winning centre-back for £61 million.
Jurgen Klopp is understood to be on the lookout for additional reinforcements in the defensive core following his team’s brush in with injuries over the course of this ongoing campaign and Barnes believes that Varane as a great ball-playing defender would be a great piece of transfer business for the Merseysiders.
‘Varane would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool,’ Barnes said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
‘He’s quick, he’s a good defender and great on the ball so he would suit the way that Liverpool play and for Liverpool to sign him would be a fantastic piece of business.
‘He would strengthen any team in the Premier League but if he is leaving Real Madrid then there will be a lot of teams interested and a lot of competition to sign him.’
The Reds had brought in Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on deadline day in January but the former arrives only on a short-term loan agreement, leaving Klopp with an option to make further moves in the transfer market during the summer.
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez remain on course to return to the fold at Anfield in time for the 2021-22 season as the Reds would seek to renew their title-winning credentials after this campaign’s faltering run of showings.
