Ex-Reds goalkeeper reveals the reason behind Liverpool FC’s recent success

Former Liverpool FC goalkeeper Simon Mignolet believes that the Red’s hugely successful 2019-20 Premier League season is due to the setbacks suffered by the club in previous campaigns. The Belgian player pointed towards the defeats suffered by the Merseyside club in finals of the League Cup, UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Champions League, as essential moments that propelled the current Liverpool FC squad to strive for greatness.

With German coach Jürgen Klopp took over the reins at the Reds in October 2015, the English club had gone for more than three years without getting their hands on a major trophy, with the last success coming in the form of the English League Cup during the 2011-12 season. Klopp boasted of a beautiful record as manager during his time at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

However, even with his hiring, Liverpool FC’s trophy-less run stretched for a further four years, with defeat’s coming in the League Cup and the UEFA Europa League during Klopp’s first season as the club’s manager. Moreover, The Reds also suffered a terrible loss at the hands of Real Madrid in the 2018 UEFA Champions League final, with then Liverpool FC goalkeeper Loris Karius being held responsible for two of the opposition goals.

But, with Klopp’s astute squad building process at the club, success finally came for the Reds in the form of the UEFA Champions League in 2019, with the club defeating fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs in the final held in Madrid. Over the following months, Liverpool FC further got their hands on the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first English side to complete a historic International treble.

Mignolet has stated his belief that his former club would continue to compete for prestigious titles in the coming time, owing to the excellent squad that Jurgen Klopp has managed to develop while at the club. The player, who now plays for Belgian side Club Brugge claims that previous losses made the Reds more determined towards winning trophies and asserting dominance. Moreover, Mignolet also described the feeling of winning the 2019 UEFA Champions League as fantastic, adding that he had fulfilled his objective of winning the coveted European trophy while at the club.
