In what could cause further damage to an already crisis-like situation at Liverpool FC’s defensive core, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Fabinho will undergo scans on a speculated hamstring injury following the 2-0 win over Midtjylland on Tuesday night.
The 27-year old had started the game at centre-back, as he has done so in recent weeks in the aftermath of Van Dijk’s injury, but Fabinho had to be taken off the pitch in the opening half as he pulled up in between the run of play.
Fabinho’s spot in the heart of the backline was taken by the 19-year old Rhys Williams, as the Liverpool FC supporters started fretting over their star player’s fitness ahead of a weekend fixture at home against West Ham United in the Premier League.
Speaking to BT Sports after the match, Klopp did not give too much information on his player’s injury speculation, with the Liverpool FC boss, however, confirming that the early signs of Fabinho’s hamstring issue did not look pleasing.
“Exactly the last thing we needed. I don’t know, he felt his hamstring so that’s not good,” said the German coach.
“He didn’t feel it that much, he said he could’ve played on but not sprinting so that doesn’t help. We will see, we will have to do a scan and see but clearly it’s not good.”
Liverpool FC’s lack of depth in the centre-back position has been a haunting prospect for the Premier League champions of late, with Van Dijk’s long-term ACL injury being followed up with Joel Matip’s continuous run as an injury-prone defender, forcing Klopp to slot Fabinho into the role of a central defender.
