Former Liverpool Defender Believes Gareth Southgate Will Be An Ideal Replacement For Jurgen Klopp

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes that England national team manager Gareth Southgate would be an ideal replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp shocked the world when he announced that he will leave Anfield at the end of season . After an illustrious career filled with the best trophies, it is time for the German to step aside.

Fenway Sports Group have a huge work to do and that is to find a successor. Many top managers are linked with a move to the Reds.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Roberto de Zerbi, Tottenham Hotspur’s Ange Postecoglou and now English manager Gareth Southgate are the preferred targets.

However, Johnson who has made over 200 appearances for Liverpool, believes that Southgate will be the best option and an ideal replacement for Klopp.

In a recent interview with Betfred, the former defender said:

“It’s an awkward one to talk about because you don’t want to go into a major tournament speculating about whether England’s manager is going elsewhere.”

“If he’s available in the summer, then you’ve got to look at all the options. He’s done a brilliant job with England, so there’s no reason why he can’t be successful with a club like Liverpool as he’d be dealing with a similar standard of players.”

Johnson has made a pretty wild claim as he feels that Southgate will be better suited to take the first bullet in the post Klopp era. In our opinion, the Three Lions boss is focused on the upcoming Euros and won’t leave such an important project.

As thing stand, Alonso is the front runner in the race. With just eight games left in the Bundesliga title race, Leverkusen are all set to end Bayern Munich’s 12 year long dominance in the league.

Real Madrid are also keeping a close eye on the Spaniard’s future and may plan a move in the summer. Although it can be too early for Alonso to take such a responsibility at Liverpool, he has all the qualities to challenge himself.

There have been instances of managers who have been a hit in their debut managerial role at a major club. Zinedine Zidane is one prime example of a manager who won back to back three UCL titles with Los Blancos.

It remains to be seen whether the Reds are successful in their attempts to lure their former player to Anfield this summer.
