Gini Wijnaldum finally addresses rumours involving his move to FC Barcelona this summer

Gini Wijnaldum has broken his silence upon the alleged rumours this summer that linked the Liverpool FC midfielder with a move to FC Barcelona, according to the Daily Mail reports.

The Dutchman, who is currently on national team duty with the Holland squad, spoke to reporters about his speculated transfer to the Catalan giants, with the 29-year old terming the interest from Ronald Koeman’s side as ‘not serious’.

Following Koeman’s appointment as the manager of Barca, Wijnaldum’s name propped up as a key signing the Spanish club would seek to make before the transfer window came to a close. However, the ex-Newcastle United man ended up staying at Anfield and has so far started all four of Liverpool FC’s Premier League games this season, including Sunday’s 7-2 shock loss at Aston Villa.

When asked to comment upon his summer links with FC Barcelona, Wijnaldum said, ‘I don’t think it was that serious,’.

‘Otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened.

‘There was nothing precise. The way it looks now, I will stay in Liverpool.

‘My contract is valid for another 10 months and that can change. You never know in football. We will see what happens.’

Reading in between the lines as per the Liverpool FC player’s recent remarks, it can be understood that his future at the Merseyside club is not a guarantee beyond the end of the 2020-21 season and with Wijnaldum’s current deal coming to an end next summer, he may choose to depart the Reds on a free transfer.
