Gini Wijnaldum quick to defend teammate Alisson after his debacle against Manchester City

Liverpool FC’s midfield maestro Gini Wijnaldum was quick to leap to his teammate Alisson Becker’s defence in the aftermath of the latter’s horrific showing in goal for Jurgen Klopp’s men in the 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.

The scoreline was intact at 1-1 before Alisson’s error-prone stretch of minutes cost the Merseysiders dearly as Ilkay Gundagon and Raheem Sterling capitalised on the Liverpool FC No.1’s mistakes to seal the game in their side’s favour.

Alisson, however, found a major defendant in the form of Wijnaldum, with the Holland international choosing to voice praise for the shot-stopper’s supreme quality between the sicks and the number of times he had come to Liverpool FC’s rescue.

“When you play football, you always know everyone can make a mistake. If you look at the whole season, I don’t know how many players made a mistake,” Wijnaldum said in an interview to Liverpool’s official website after the match.

“And if you look at the other side, he [Alisson] saved us so much. It will always happen that a goalkeeper makes a mistake. You just try to fix it in the game.

“We were more disappointed that we couldn’t change it around for him because if you look at since he was here how many times he saved us – he won trophies for us – it’s difficult that we couldn’t change it around for him.”

Sunday’s loss on their own patch to the table-toppers Manchester City meant that Pep Guardiola’s side went ten points clear off the defending champions despite having played a game less when compared to their arch-foes.

Klopp’s men have now suffered their third straight defeat in a row at Anfield and things don’t look bright for the Merseyside Reds as even a top-four finish come the end of the campaign looks in severe doubt.
