Liverpool sealed Champions League qualification coursey of a final day win over Cyrstal Palace at Anfield with Jurgen Klopp’s men securing a 2-0 scoreline.
The Reds largely endured a campaign of mixed fortunes with an ever-increasing injury list and a period of shallow form on their home turf leaving them well outside the top-four of the Premier League standings.
However, they bounced back in style to finish the season on a high and will hope to carry this recent run of rich form into the 2021-22 campaign.
Here we will go through each game and line up which led towards these historic achievements.
Match 1 – Liverpool v Leeds United (4-3) – 12th September 2020
The Reds played hosts to Premier League new boys Leeds United in their first match of the campaign, and they were in for a stern test with the visitors to Anfield putting up a solid display on the attacking front.
In the end it was Liverpool who secured the win largely thanks to a hat-trick from Mohammad Salah.
Match 2 – Chelsea v Liverpool (0-2) – 20th September 2020
Next up Jurgen Klopp’s men visited Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea with a major change in the XI as Fabinho started at centre-back in the place of Joe Gomez who dropped out of the squad with injury.
Liverpool, however, managed to secure a comfortable win over the 10-man Blues as Sadio Mane netted a brace to propel his side to bag all three points.
Match 3 – Liverpool v Arsenal (3-1) – 29th September 2020
The Merseysiders came from behind to stage a win over the visiting Arsenal side who had taken the lead through striker Alexandre Lacazette.
Goals from Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and new boy Diogo Jota ensured the win at home turf for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Match 4 – Aston Villa v Liverpool (7-2) – 4th October 2020
A major and shock drubbing awaited Liverpool on their visit to Villa Park with Dean Smith’s side shipping seven goals past a toothless Reds outfit that failed to keep the hosts in check.
Ollie Watkins was the hat-trick hero for Villa with Mohammad Salah’s brace proving no less than a consolation amid Liverpool’s clueless showing away from Anfield.
Match 5 – Everton v Liverpool (2-2) – 17th October 2020
Fresh off the big defeat at Villa Park, Liverpool’s trip to city rivals Everton finished in a thrilling but unfortunate stalemate in a game which was Virgil van Dijk’s final appearance for the 2020-21 season.
The Dutchman was withdrawn off the pitch after coming together with Everton goalie Jordan Pickford and was sidelined for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.
Match 6 – Liverpool v Sheffield United (2-1) – 25th October 2020
The Reds returned to winning ways with a 2-1 scoreline their favour as basement side Sheffield United made the travels to Anfield in game week six of the Premier League season.
Sheffield took the unlikeliest of leads through a spot-kick from Sander Berge but Liverpool had Firmino and Jota to rely upon and secure the three points from a must-win fixture.
Match 7 – Liverpool v West Ham United (2-1) – 31st October 2020
Another away side, this time The Hammers, drew first blood against Liverpool on their own patch but Klopp’s men fought back valiantly to secure the victory.
Diogo Jota continued his fine run of form for his new colours and Mohammad Salah scored from the spot-kick ensuring Liverpool’s home form remained as solid as ever.
Match 8 – Manchester City v Liverpool (1-1) – 8th November 2020
A stern test awaited Liverpool in the form of fellow title-challengers Manchester City but the high-billed clash finished in a rather lacklustre draw.
Salah gave his side the lead from a penalty inside the first quarter of the game following which City found a breakthrough in Gabriel Jesus’ leveller.
Match 9 – Liverpool v Leicester City (3-0) – 23rd November 2020
The Reds put out an emphatic showing against the visiting Leicester City with goals from Firmino and Jota along with an own goal from Johnny Evans resulting in a 3-0 win for the home side.
It had been a much-changed XI that took the field for Liverpool with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk missing due to injuries.
Match 10 – Brighton v Liverpool (1-1) – 28th November 2020
Liverpool were held to a frustrating draw at the Amex against Chris Potter’s Brighton who got the leveller in stoppage time.
Pascal Grob’s spot-kick in the third minute of added time was enough to cancel out Jota’s strike around the hour mark as Klopp’s side men dropped valuable points on the road.
Match 11 – Liverpool v Wolves (4-0) – 7th December 2020
The Anfield giants thumped Wolves 4-0 on home turf in a splendid showing that presented themselves as serious challengers for a second successive top-flight crown.
Goals from Wijnaldum, Salah and Matip all but ensured the win for Liverpool before Wolves full-back Nelson Semedo put the ball into his own net to make it four for the hosts.
Match 12 – Fulham v Liverpool (1-1) – 13th December 2020
Liverpool’s trip to Premier League new boys Fulham resulted in yet another lacklustre showing away from home from Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The defending champions drew 1-1 with Scott Parker’s Cottagers who had made the early breakthrough in the game before it came down to Salah’s brilliance once again from the spot-kick to salvage a point for his side.
Match 13 – Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur (2-1) – 17th December 2020
The major injury crisis at Anfield forced Jurgen Klopp to draft the teenage centre-back Rhys Willaims into his XI alongside the makeshift option in Fabinho but Liverpool proved able enough to overcome Spurs in a narrow 2-1 win.
Salah gave Liverpool the lead before Spurs talisman Son equalized meaning Roberto Firmino’s 90th-minute winner was all it took for the hosts to maintain their unbeaten run on their patch.
Match 14 – Crystal Palace v Liverpool (0-7) – 19th December 2020
Liverpool’s biggest away win in their Premier League history came on their visit to Selhurst Park in the latter stages of 2020 with the Reds recording a huge 7-0 win over the Eagles.
Takumi Minamino got his first league goal for Liverpool and Mohammad Salah came off the bench to net a brace as Klopp’s men ran riot on the road to Crystal Palace.
Match 15 – Liverpool v West Brom (1-1) – 27th December 2020
On the back of a much-convincing display at Selhurst Park Jurgen Klopp’s Merseysiders failed to carry on the momentum as they were held to a stalemate at Anfield by West Brom.
Sadio Mane gave Liverpool an early lead in the 12th minute but the visitors left it late to snatch the leveller from a corner which was headed past Alisson by Semi Ajayi with just eight minutes left to play for.
Match 16 – Newcastle United v Liverpool (0-0) – 31st December 2020
Liverpool were held to a second straight draw in Premier League action as Jurgen Klopp’s men made the travels to St. James’ Park.
The Reds endured a frustrating outing on the attacking front despite the Firmino-Mane-Salah combine on show for the visitors.
Match 17 – Southampton v Liverpool (1-0) – 5th January 2021
The Premier League holders got off to the worst possible start upon the turn of the year as they came out second best to Southampton on the road.
Former Red Danny Ings netted the only goal of the game to give the Saints a pivotal win over a Liverpool side that could not get anything right whilst on the pitch.
Match 18 – Liverpool v Manchester United (0-0) – 17th January 2021
The high-billed North-West derby fixture fizzled out to finish in a goalless stalemate with neither side unable to break the deadlock.
Lack of centre-back options once again forced Klopp to field his midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in the heart of the defence as makeshift options.
Match 19 – Liverpool v Burnley (0-1) – 22nd January 2021
Burnley walked away the most shocking of victors on their trip to Anfield with Sean Dyche’s side sealing all three points courtesy of a late penalty from Ashley Barnes.
Despite having Joel Matip back in the starting eleven it was a toothless showing from the Merseysiders who failed to obtain the desired result in spite of being backed as heavy favourites for the clash.
Match 20 – Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool (1-3) – 29th January 2021
The Reds shook off the defeat to Burnley in style as Jurgen Klopp’s side turned up at their very best in the capital city to overcome Spurs 3-1.
Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold were all on the scoresheet to make it a convincing win for the Merseysiders.
Match 21 – West Ham United v Liverpool (1-3) – 31st January 2021
Another influential display in the capital city meant Liverpool picking up three points yet again on their travels to the London Stadium to face the Hammers.
Mohammad Salah scored a brace and Gini Wijnaldum chipped in with a late goal to make it another win on the run for Liverpool.
Match 22 – Liverpool v Brighton (0-1) – 4th February 2021
It was the Seagulls this time around who took all three points from the Anfield showdown to make matters worse for Liverpool’s underwhelming form when playing on their own patch.
Graham Potter’s side took the lead through midfielder Steven Alzete just before the hour mark and it turned out to be the winning goal for the travelling Brighton outfit.
Match 23 – Liverpool v Manchester City (1-4) – 7th February 2021
Liverpool were trounced yet again at Anfield and this time it was Manchester City who grabbed a memorable win on the road to their rivals.
The Reds seemed to have found a way back through Salah after going behind but City got three goals within a span of just ten minutes to rubber-stamp the victory on away territory.
Match 24 – Leicester City v Liverpool (1-3) – 13th February 2021
A third straight defeat on the run for an under-fire Liverpool side came at the King Power Stadium with the Foxes putting up a terrific showing to punish another miserable display from the defending champions.
Liverpool took the lead through Salah but Leicester found the back of the net thrice in just seven minutes to secure the win.
Match 25 – Liverpool v Everton (0-2) – 20th February 2021
Everton got the first win at the famed Anfield venue since 1999 with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds succumbing to their fourth defeat in a row.
Richarlison scored inside the opening five minutes and Gylfi Sigurdsson left it late to double the lead from the penalty spot.
Match 26 – Sheffield United v Liverpool (0-2) – 1st March 2021
Liverpool returned to much-needed winning ways with a far from convicting display at Bramall Lane which nevertheless resulted in a 2-0 victory for the visitors.
Curtis Jones opened the scoring just after half-time and Sheffield’s Kean Bryan bundled the ball into the back of his own net to gift the Reds their second goal of the game.
Match 27 – Liverpool v Chelsea (0-1) – 5th March 2021
The Reds failed to end their woeful home form for the best as the new Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel steered his side to an important win at Anfield.
Mason Mount got the only goal of the game with a fantastic strike past Alisson as Liverpool struggled to find a way back and salvage something from their home fixture.
Match 28 – Liverpool v Fulham (0-1) – 7th March 2021
Fulham came as heavy underdogs on their visit to Anfield but still claimed all three points thanks to a Mario Lemina strike.
The result meant that Liverpool’s horrid losing streak at home turf continued as Jurgen Klopp’s men looked in severe danger of missing out on Champions League football for the next season.
Match 29 – Wolves v Liverpool (0-1) – 16th March 2021
Diogo Jota scored against his former club upon his much-anticipated return from a knee injury thereby ensuring an important win on the road for Liverpool.
The game also saw the Ozan Kabak-Nat Phillips pairing deliver a solid showing at the back as Klopp found his centre-back options turning up in times of distress at Anfield.
Match 30 – Arsenal v Liverpool (0-3) – 4th April 2021
Jota continued his fine run of form in front of the goal with a brace against the Gunners and Salah chipped in with a goal as well to lead Liverpool to a 3-0 win in North London.
Klopp had opted to start Roberto Firmino in the frontline for the Reds but Jota came off the bench to make an immediate yet important impact on the game’s proceedings.
Match 31 – Liverpool v Aston Villa (2-1) – 10th April 2021
The Reds left it very late to snatch a win and keep their top-four hopes alive as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s fantastic strike ensured Aston Villa’s defeat on their travels to Merseyside.
Watkins had given Villa the lead following which Mohammad Salah found the leveller for his side just before the hour mark on the clock.
Match 32 – Leeds United v Liverpool (1-1) – 20th April 2021
Liverpool’s hopes of climbing up the Premier League table were dealt a major blow with Klopp and Co being held to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road by Leeds United.
It was once again a very late goal that thrawated Liverpool’s chances of securing the win as Leeds man Diego Llorente found the back of the net in the 87th minute to cancel Sadio Mane’s early opener.
Match 33 – Liverpool v Newcastle United (1-1) – 5th May 2021
Another match, another late drama for Liverpool as the visitors Newcastle United snatched an equalizer through the last kick of the game with Joe Willock scoring.
The Reds had taken the lead through Salah in just the third minute of the match and looked in control to secure all three points but Willock had other ideas to salvage a draw for his side.
Match 34 – Liverpool v Southampton (2-0) – 9th May 2021
Liverpool got back to winning ways after two draws on the run as Southampton came to Anfield and were handed a 2-0 defeat by the Merseysiders.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring for the hosts and Thiago Alcantara got his very first goal in the Reds shirt through a well-placed driving finish in the dying stages of the match.
Match 35 – Manchester United v Liverpool (2-4) – 14th May 2021
Perhaps Liverpool’s most memorable matchup of the 2020-21 season was the win at Old Trafford, a ground which had not been a happy hunting venue for the Reds since 2014.
The hosts drew first blood through Bruno Fernandes but Diogo Jota, Firmino and Salah all scored to make it a superb 4-2 win for Jurgen Klopp’s travelling party.
Match 36 – West Brom v Liverpool (1-2) – 16th May 2021
Liverpool looked set to settle for a draw at the Hawthorns which would made a dampening blow to their top-four hopes but Reds No.1 Alisson Becker was there to steal the win for his side.
The Brazillian shot-stopper came to the opposition box for a corner that came Liverpool’s way in the final seconds of stoppage time with the score at 1-1 and headed the ball rather superbly to secure a very important three points for the Merseysiders.
Match 37 – Burnley v Liverpool (0-3) – 20th May 2021
A convincing display at Turf Moor ensured the win for Liverpool with goals coming from Roberto Firmino, Nat Phillips and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The win meant the Reds leaping above Leicester City into fourth place in the Premier League table.
Match 38 – Liverpool v Crystal Palace (2-0) – 23rd May 2021
The Reds finished the 2020-21 Premier League season with aplomb as a Sadio Mane brace propelled Jurgen Klopp’s men to a victory over Crystal Palace and ensured their spot in the Champions League campaign for the forthcoming season.
