How would Liverpool lineup with Thiago Alcantara?

Liverpool FC have finally won the Premier League for the first time and it’s the club’s first league title in 30 years. The club and manager Jurgen Klopp are not keen on strengthening the side a lot, because of the pandemic scenario. It is now reported that the Reds keen on getting Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, to strengthen their midfield.

Thiago is graduated from the fabled La Masia academy of Barcelona and has trained under the likes of Pep Guardiola. The Spanish international is one of the most skilful, sleek yet versatile midfielders in the game. He is known for his mesmeric distribution skills, unbelievable turns, lightning-quick feet and scintillating technical abilities.

The midfielder joined Bayern Munich from Barcelona in 2013, when Pep Guardiola wanted to have a reunion with his prodigy. It is reported that Guardiola was hell-bent for the Bayern owners to bring in Thiago from Barcelona and he didn’t want anyone else. Since then, Thiago has made it big in Bavaria and has been a mainstay at the heart of the Bayern midfield.

The Spanish maestro has proved his calibre in both Bundesliga and La Liga, having played for Barcelona and Bayern Munich. With Bayern Munich, the Spanish Maestro has won 14 major titles since joining in 2013.  In his seven years in Bavaria, Thiago has played 231 games in which he has scored 31 goals and has provided 37 assists.

Liverpool have been rampant in the Premier League this season, having racked up 99 points just one point shy of the record. The Reds have scored a lot of goals this season, 85 to be specific, and looked great going forward. Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were the most creative players of the team, with both players providing over 10 assists this season.

If the reports are to be believed, Thiago will join Liverpool this summer transfer window for about £30m. The signing of the world-class midfielder will only make the Reds look better. Let us now have a look at how Liverpool might lineup with Thiago Alcantara.

The 4-3-3

The 4-3-3 formation is Liverpool’s most go-to formation under Klopp and this formation will favour the qualities Thiago possesses. But it is for everyone to see that most of Liverpool’s creativity comes from the flanks and not from the central midfielders. Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho are all robust players who get goals from headers but aren’t that good when it comes to creative passes.

Thiago, with his range of passing, will be able to solve this problem and will another dimension to Liverpool’s game. The Spanish midfielder’s qualities on the ball will make Liverpool unpredictable, and make them even harder to play against. With Thiago at the heart of the midfield, the Reds will be able to attack from the centre of the pitch as well as the flanks

The 4-2-3-1

Thiago plays in this position for Bayern Munich and with Fabinho beside him, he will be protected well. Thiago’s long-range of passing will come in handy in such a formation and it will be helpful against teams that keep possession. With more men in the midfield, Liverpool will be able to win back possession faster, even if they lose the ball.

The 29-year old has silky feet and often bails his teams out of trouble with his dribbling skills. Thiago, because of his wide range of skills and control can keep the ball very well even under pressure. Jurgen Klopp has always insisted from playing out of the back and with Thiago on the ball Liverpool will unlock new potentials.

It is widely believed that the player wants to move and is seeking a deal that will take him to Anfield. But with PSG now entering the race to sign Thiago, the tables might have turned. Only time will tell if Thiago joins Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
