Recent days have seen Liverpool FC make an unlikely swoop for Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara in the summer transfer window. Having been crowned the Premier League champions last week, the Reds would no doubt be rallying themselves for fierce competition from their rivals in the Premier League for the league title next season.
Manchester City will bounce back much stronger from their relatively timid display this campaign, and with Manchester United and Chelsea on a mission to strengthen themselves by dipping into the transfer market, Jurgen Klopp’s high-flying squad face an enormous task of having to defend their Premier League title next year.
A move for Thiago comes amid a huge clamoring among the Liverpool FC fanbase who are asking Klopp for a new big-name player arrival at Anfield. The Spanish midfielder has been a major creative force throughout his playing career, be it at Bayern or at FC Barcelona in the past. Since moving to Germany to play for Bayern in 2013, Thiago has emerged as one of the most skillful players in the Bundesliga.
The 29-year old midfielder’s arrival at Liverpool FC could shake up Jurgen Klopp’s current midfield department. Klopp’s preferred trio of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and Gini Wijnaldum in the Reds’ midfield has been successful in winning laurels for the Merseyside club, however, have often been subjected to criticism of approaching a more defensive style of play.
The current midfield trio does not contribute much towards Liverpool FC’s attacking display of power. Instead, the Reds’ full-backs Trent Alexander Arnold and Andy Robertson have to shoulder the additional responsibility of carving out spaces for Liverpool FC’s dynamic front three. Such an event sometimes leads to the Reds getting exposed on the flanks due to the wing-backs operating much higher on the pitch.
Jurgen Klopp has often entrusted his midfield creativity to come from Alex Oxlade Chamberlain or Naby Keita. However, the issue is that Chamberlain and Keita are not the regular starters in Klopp’s starting lineup. The current season has seen Keita rise up to the challenge of being a deep-lying playmaker for the Reds after failing to impress both fans and football pundits in his first season at Anfield. The Guinean international has scored goals and has also been involved in setting up his teammates for several goalscoring opportunities.
However, Keita has only started 13 Premier League games this season which casts a big question mark over Jurgen Klopp’s trust in the 25-year old midfielder’s impact on the Liverpool FC style of play. On the other hand, Chamberlain too has struggled for game time in the 2019-20 season, however, has been a good performer on the pitch when given the opportunity.
In the light of current events, Thiago’s signing seems a viable option for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool FC. The Spaniard can certainly live up to the high expectations Liverpool FC fans will have for him and his style of play. Moreover, the Bayern star has a rich level of experience of playing at the highest level for both the Bundesliga outfit as well as FC Barcelona.
Klopp would certainly look to bring two or three new players in the transfer window to freshen up the Liverpool FC squad. Having got his hands on the coveted Premier League title, the German manager would aim for an unprecedented treble next season that would no doubt be an easy task for the Reds.
Having missed out signing German sensation Timo Werner earlier to Chelsea FC over pricing concerns, Klopp would not be happy if he is not able to finalize a deal for Thiago with Bayern Munich. Recent reports indicate that Liverpool FC are willing to pay a sum of €30 million for the Spanish international.
With only a year remaining on Thiago’s existing deal with the Bundesliga champions, the player will be given the nod to depart the club shortly, it seems. However, in the unlikely scenario that Liverpool FC are unable to land the signature of the 29-year old midfielder, several other top European sides would consider a move for the Bayern star.
The Reds supporters will be very glad if their club confirms the signing of Thiago in the coming weeks. Having tasted Premier League glory, the Liverpool FC fans would want to create an era of dominance in the years to come under Jurgen Klopp and the arrival of new talented players would be a major step towards achieving that.
