James Milner gives his verdict on Manchester United’s title challenge to Liverpool

Manchester United remain the only team in English top-flight football to carry on their impressive run of form of late, according to Liverpool FC workhorse James Milner.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men moved to the joint top spot in the Premier League standings with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Friday evening, as Liverpool FC dropped points in two consecutive games over the past week.

The Merseysiders drew 1-1 with West Brom at Anfield last weekend and were frustrated in a goalless stalemate against Newcastle United earlier this week, handing a great opportunity to arch-rivals Manchester United to close the gap on the top of the league table.

Milner admitted that United’s recent streak of results make them perhaps the sole team in the top-flight division to maintain consistency as the former Leeds United man said it was time that the defending champions got back to their best in picking up wins both home and away in league action.

“I think it [Liverpool position] is a positive but it seems to be at this moment in time that nobody wants to take it by the scruff of the neck,” said Milner, as quoted by the Express.

“We’ve dropped points, everyone seems to be dropping points. United have a good run and they’re probably the only team who are putting a run together.

“It’s important that we need to kick on now and get a few three-pointers.

“But the world is in a very strange place at the moment and it’s the same in football.

“Everybody’s lives are upside down, it’s tough mentally for everybody and it’s the same in football. We just need to keep plugging away.”

Liverpool FC next take on high-flying Southampton early next week as Jurgen Klopp’s star-studded side hope to get back on track with results in their favour following Manchester United’s upsurge in the standings.
