Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has backed his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard for the now vacant Aston Villa managerial role.
The Villa Park outfit will be on the hunt for a new manager to take the reigns after Dean Smith was handed the axe following a fifth defeat on the trot for the Midlanders on Saturday against Southampton.
Anfield icon Gerrard is tipped to be one of the names that will be considered by the Aston Villa board with the ex-Liverpool midfielder earning rave reviews for his success with Rangers in Scotland on the back of his title-winning heroics last season.
Gerrard received a strong show of backing from his old Liverpool teammate Jamie Carragher who told Sky Sports that the Aston Villa job came at the perfect time for Gerrard to jump the ship from Ibrox where he has achieved tremendous success.
Carragher added that Gerrard should not hold out on making the move to England’s top flight despite the speculation that he is a strong frontrunner to take over from the current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at Anfield come 2024.
“I think Aston Villa as a club would be a great move for Steven Gerrard, but the situation that he finds himself in right now is that he took the title off Celtic last season and he is in a great position to win it again.”
“I think in a perfect world you would want to stay at Rangers until the end of the season and come away from there with two titles.”
“People talk about Liverpool. That might be two or three years with Jurgen Klopp.”
“You won’t get many better offers than Villa but in a perfect world I think he wants to come away from Rangers with another two or three trophies.”
