Anfield great Jamie Carragher is impressed by Liverpool’s new signing Darwin Nunez who would be adding more firepower to the attacking lineup for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Nunez made the move to Merseyside on Wednesday in what is rumoured to be a club-record transfer for Liverpool with the fee expected to rise to a potential £85 million with add-ons.
The 22-year-old Uruguayan international had emerged as one of the standout players across Europe’s big leagues the last term with 34 goals in 41 outings in the Benfica shirt which made Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool take note of his ability.
His arrival at Anfield will be a major boost to Klopp’s depth in the forward roles especially with the long-serving Sadio Mane closing in on his move to German champions Bayern Munich with the 30-year-old agreeing upon personal terms.
Speaking to Sky Sports, ex-Liverpool man Carragher admitted that Mane’s exit could mean a regular berth on the team sheet for Liverpool’s new boy Nunez alongside Mohamed Salah and January recruit Luis Diaz.
‘Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp normally get the recruitment right, certainly when they spend big and the type of figures we’re talking here that’s what they spent on the goalkeeper [Alisson] and [Virgil] van Dijk and they made a huge difference.
‘Liverpool do need to refresh the frontline because of the age of that front three who have been absolutely fantastic for the last four or five years with Liverpool.
‘It is sad to see it broken up in some ways but it had to come to an end sooner or later.
‘With Sadio Mane looking like he’s going to move on, Liverpool had to do something and he’s the one they’ve identified.
‘I think the start of next season Liverpool’s front three will be Salah, Nunez and Diaz on the left.’
