Joe Gomez suffers leg injury in Liverpool’s win over Southampton

Joe Gomez suffered a nasty leg injury in Liverpool’s win over Southampton on Tuesday night in a blow to Jurgen Klopp’s squad rotation plans.

Gomez featured in the league clash until half-time which was when Jurgen Klopp rang in a change from the bench as skipper Jordan Henderson came on and James Milner shifted to right-back.

In the aftermath of the game, Klopp confirmed in his post-match presser that Gomez was in for an injury setback but the Liverpool boss added that the England international defender could be working his way to full fitness earlier than expected.

“I hope we are lucky. Joe himself has pain but not too much.

“He got, one time, a real shock to the system, but he is sitting in the dressing room and when I spoke to him he was in a good mood. I think maybe we were probably lucky but we have to figure that out.”

The Reds clinched three points of paramount importance on their travels to St. Mary’s with goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip securing the win from behind after Southampton took an early lead.

Liverpool’s result on Tuesday night means that the race for the Premier League crown goes down to the last day of the campaign with just a point separating Klopp’s men from Manchester City at the summit.
